Massachusetts rep calls 21 Republicans 'cowards' for voting against honoring law enforcement working during the Capitol riot

Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern on Sunday called 21 Republicans "cowards" for voting against honoring officers who worked during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.
"Those Republicans who voted against providing Capitol Police a gold medal for their heroism on January 6, they're cowards. I have no idea what the hell they were thinking," McGovern, a Democrat, said in an interview with Boston CBS station WBZ-TV.
As Insider previously reported, 21 Republicans in the House last week voted against honoring the officers who worked during the insurrection with the highest congressional honor.
"Quite frankly it's sick that a sitting member of Congress who was here on January 6 whose lives were protected by Capitol Police can't even vote to honor them. There's something that's terribly wrong with the Republican party," he added.
Five people, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, died as a result of the riot, which was led by a pro-Trump mob who stormed the building and overpowered law enforcement while Congress met to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Not a single Democrat vote against the measure last week. Despite the 21 votes against it, the bill passed the House with an overwhelming 406 votes in favor, Insider previously reported.
Many Republicans who voted against the measure disputed calling the riot an "insurrection." In the months since January 6, many in the GOP have attempted to downplay the significance of the riot.
The Senate has already introduced its version of the measure to honor the officers, which is expected to pass, according to the report.
