The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It releases in theaters and on HBO Max on June 4, but does the sequel have an end-credits scene worth waiting around for? Originally slated to release only in theaters in September 2020, Warner Bros pushed back the latest installment in the Conjuring franchise to summer 2021, where it's receiving a simultaneous release on WarnerMedia's streaming service, HBO Max, without any surcharge - but for one month only. After that, it'll be removed.
Once again, the third installment in the Conjuring trilogy follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate a paranormal occurrence, though this time instead of being relegated to one home, they've gone on the road. Furthermore, The Conjuring 3 propels the story forward into the early 1980s, taking place years after the previous franchise installment, Annabelle Comes Home, which was set in the 1970s. Interestingly, as director Michael Chaves has discussed in interviews leading up to The Conjuring 3's release, there's no explicit setup for future movies despite there being potential for more stories. So what does that mean for the post-credits scene?

In addition to seeing the names of the people who worked tirelessly on this film, including through the pandemic, The Conjuring 3 includes one of Ed and Lorraine Warrens' real tape recordings to keep viewers interested, which calls back to an earlier scene in the film. Comparing what happened in the movie to what happened in real life is captivating - and in many ways, horrifying. It's worth listening to as the credits roll.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is an intriguing installment in the trilogy. Not only does it reinvent the core format of the franchise as a whole, but it introduces new concepts that haven't been explored yet. So far, The Conjuring universe has been about self-contained stories, yet this one brings the Warrens fully into the public's eye and tells a haunting true story that revamped the legal system in the 1980s and 1990s - hence its name. The idea of using the excuse "the devil made me do it" became more and more commonplace after the Arne Johnson trial, which is something The Conjuring 3 lays the foundation for.
What's interesting is that The Conjuring 3 originally did have a post-credits scene that would've set up the next movie, but it was cut because the filmmakers felt their ending to the movie worked better to close off this chapter of the Warrens' lives. Chaves says it's possible for that particular scene to return in some form in the future, perhaps in another installment or as a teaser for another film, but he won't give away that information nor say what the credits scene included.
