Kyrgyzstan ski touring adventure
Just back from a brilliant recce trip, ski touring in Kyrgyzstan. Getting there was half the adventure, starting with a quick turn around from our trip to Armenia: fly back to Heathrow, meet Phil from Backcountry Uk and my boys to swap kit and skis etc, then straight back to Moscow and on to Bishkek…
Arriving mid afternoon local time, we picked up our Russian 4WD truck for the trip and set off driving across the country, passing through ex Soviet landscapes on bumpy, ice bound roads. We spent the night in a local town, before heading on to our first destination, a remote village high in the Tien Shan mountains. Here we stayed with a lovely local family and enjoyed 3 days ski touring in the unique ‘bottomless’ local snowpack.
After a night back in town, we then moved on with some adventurous off road driving to our rendezvous point for the journey up to a remote Yurt Camp for the rest of our trip. This was a truly amazing location – with a brilliant setup in camp (great food, on tap beer, a Russian Banya sauna etc) and amazing skiing in the surrounding mountains.
All too soon it was time to head home, with a final mornings’ skiing before the long drive back to Bishkek and a good night out in the capital, before an early start back to the airport and reality.
