Giovani Lo Celso reveals which result was ‘turning point’ in Tottenham’s season

Giovani Lo Celso believes that Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool before Christmas was a major turning point in their season.

Jose Mourinho’s team arrived at Anfield sitting top of the Premier League on goal difference following an 11-match unbeaten run after the opening-day loss to Everton.

And despite a lacklustre performance, Spurs were seconds away from leaving Merseyside with an impressive point which would have kept them ahead of the Reds.

However, Roberto Firmino’s added time saw Liverpool climb above Mourinho’s side, who wouldn’t top the Premier League again.

In fact, Tottenham would register just 11 wins from their final 25 games, and only ended up claiming a European place in the final few minutes at Leicester last weekend thanks to Gareth Bale’s brace.

Spurs did improve under Ryan Mason, managing four victories from six, but Argentine Lo Celso reckons that the late defeat at Anfield was the catalyst for their bad form.

“We all know that we had a great start to the season and then we were top of the league in December, but then I think the Liverpool away fixture was quite a key turning point. We were a bit unlucky in that game and it didn’t turn out well for us as we lost,” he told Tottenham – quotes via Football.London.

“After then, we had one or two results go against us, we were a bit unlucky. Sometimes we did not perform at our best and, in the meantime, not had the best of results.”
