Jacob deGrom Exits Early vs. Diamondbacks on Sunday

deGrom was scratched from his last scheduled start due to side tightness, but he took the mound to start Sunday’s game vs. the Diamondbacks. That said, he was clearly battling discomfort during the early innings, and he ultimately called for the trainers after his second warmup pitch in the top of the sixth inning. deGrom was his usual dominant self before exiting, racking up six strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one earned run.
Hopefully, the injury isn’t serious, but it’s worth monitoring any time a pitcher of deGrom’s caliber is pulled from a start early. He’s won the NL Cy Young award in two of the past three seasons, and he’s been as good as ever to start the 2021 season. He entered Sunday’s start with a 0.51 ERA and 0.82 FIP while striking out an average of 15.17 batters per nine innings.
The Mets offense has also started to show some signs of life recently, and they’ve won each of their past four games. They’re currently tied with the Phillies atop the NL East standings, but the Mets are slight +120 favorites to win the division on FanDuel Sportsbook.
