Last Saturday in The American Spectator I warned that the Left is coming to demolish the homeland. I have come to believe that Mrs. Linda Thomas-Greenfield reads my columns with fervor and obedience. It’s the only explanation as to why the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations took so little time to launch her unpatriotic campaign. The episode confirms that the UN is like that remote and discreet place where you put your most booze-prone friend at your wedding, because, although you may be indebted to him, he’s an embarrassment every time he opens his mouth; whenever asked about this kind of jerk, he is undoubtedly described as a guest of the bride.
On Wednesday, at the National Action Network’s Annual Summit, the ambassador spewed the most anti-American speech I have ever heard from a U.S. ambassador. If Biden does not remove her from office in the next few hours (Joe, wake up, it’s lunchtime!), we must conclude that a new and bloody culture war has begun. And that the enemy comes from inside the White House and its own institutions. We have every reason to believe that this is the most important battle of all those being waged at the moment in the Western world, with the sole exception of the progressive-coronaviral crusade against open pubs. I hate those politicians who spend their lives pretending to be teetotalers.
Thomas-Greenfield is not, shall we say, a Stajanovist. Before the National Action Network, the ambassador lazily plagiarized part of her speech from March 19 at the UN. I don’t blame her. If you go to the trouble of inventing such a load of nonsense to spew out at the UN, it’s only natural that you hurl it at the National Action Network as just punishment for inviting her to speak in the first place. Both of Thomas-Greenfield’s speeches can be summed up in one sentence: “The original sin of slavery weaved white supremacy into our founding documents and principles.” Translated into common parlance, this is something like, “I deeply hate the United States of America and everything it stands for, and I wish the whole world hated it as much as I do.”
It is worth remembering that this lady, now rescued by Biden, was dismissed by Donald Trump. Someone in the progressive press denounced then that Trump was carrying out a “witch hunt.” And perhaps he was, in the strict sense of the word; I can’t bring myself to contradict a left-wing journalist.
The ambassador has a supernatural ability to detect racism in the United States. She sees racism everywhere. From the flag to the hamburgers. Racism and injustice, or, as she puts it, quite tritely, “inequity.” But then she suffers from myopia when looking at China. There she sees no racism, no inequality, no nothing. Thomas-Greenfield is a great admirer of the Chinese regime. She has lost no occasion to praise it, like the time, during her acclaimed speech at the Confucius Institute in 2019, where she came close to producing a photograph of Mao from her pocket and kissing it before the audience.
Someone should explain to her that America has no foundational sin. But, above all, Biden should not allow this dangerous rewriting of history. Rod Dreher has rightly reminded us that the Left has already tried to institutionalize a similar folly to Spain’s version of the 1619 Project. In my country, they passed something called the Law of Historical Memory, in order to rewrite history, tear down statues of Franco and everything they consider Francoist (including monuments to people erected when Franco was still in his infancy), as well as rewriting the whole damn Spanish street map. They have also managed to turn into a criminal offense to say in Spain that, if Franco had not won the civil war, today the country would be an impoverished satellite of the Soviet Union, and the Catholic genocide initiated by the Left in 1936 would have been consummated (sorry, muchachos, I’m saying it in America!). What’s more, I wouldn’t be able to be here now.
I have not the slightest sympathy for racists. I believe in nations of free and equal people. Personally, I consider a black idiot to be just as much of an idiot as a white idiot. And the individual this article is dedicated to confirms the veracity of my statement.
As for history, it only makes sense within history. Only an idiot judges events from a hundred years ago with contemporary eyes and standards. To rewrite it is to lie. And as for America’s patriotic foundations, the whole world, with the exception of Thomas-Greenfield, knows that its hallmark is not white supremacism, but freedom. Once again, I turn to the master P. J. O’Rourke, who once wrote, “America wasn’t founded so that we could all be better. America was founded so we could all be anything we damned well pleased.”
Ultimately, the founding of a nation is a more serious matter than a BLM youth assembly, where joints are passed around and Amanda Gorman’s drivel — the kind of poetry that can make a cactus bloom inside your fridge — is recited. I expect the Founding Fathers would be treated with more respect by this ambassador if they had gotten together to get drunk and smash multinational storefronts, but the fact is that they developed the ideas that have made the entire West today want to look like America. It can’t be such a bad thing when everyone wants it.
