MonsterVerse Gives Godzilla A Hidden Power | Screen Rant
A Godzilla vs. Kong graphic novel prequel reveals a new ability for Gojira that relates to his vision. It would seem that the MonsterVerse’s take on the King of the Monsters possesses powers audiences haven’t seen from him on the big screen. Released in conjunction with Godzilla vs. Kong were two graphic novels set in the MonsterVerse, Kingdom Kong and Godzilla: Dominion.
Both stories helped fill in readers on what was going during the five-year gap between Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. Dominion, which takes place two years after the fall of Ghidorah, introduces two of King of the Monsters’ missing Titans, further explores Scylla and Behemoth, and dives deep into what Godzilla has been up to as the alpha. Apparently, Ghidorah waking up so many monsters at once has kept Godzilla busy and he’s been spending much of his time fighting other Titans and keeping them from causing trouble for the planet.
One of the monsters Godzilla faces off against in Dominion forces him to demonstrate a previously unknown ability. Tiamat, a giant sea serpent whose name popped up on a monitor screen in King of the Monsters, fought Godzilla in the water and sprayed him with a toxic substance. Whatever this attack was, it managed to blind Godzilla with “brightness”. Despite having his vision impaired, Godzilla was still able to target Tiamat. It was said in one of the panels that Godzilla has “other ways to see.” Afterward, he was shown detecting Tiamat’s heat signature, and then retaliating with a tail smack.
Based on what was shown in the graphic novel, Godzilla has some form of thermal vision, not unlike the titular alien in the 1987 action film, Predator. By seeing heat sources, Godzilla can identify his opponents even when he’s temporarily blinded. Also, the phrase, “other ways to see”, hints his thermal vision may not be his only alternative to sight. This is the first time he’s ever displayed this capability, but it’s possible Godzilla's actually used it without audiences realizing it.
It could be that Godzilla secretly employed this ability to follow the movements of Ghidorah and the MUTOs, who he fought in the dark. It was only seen in Dominion because this particular story is told through Godzilla’s point of view, which is a perspective that no MonsterVerse movie has been able to offer so far. As a powerful, god-like being who has been around for thousands of years, there’s a certain mysterious element to his character that will likely never go away. That was made clear in King of the Monsters, when he was shown to have a hidden home in the Hollow Earth tunnels. All things considered, there’s no telling what other secrets this ancient force of nature is hiding.
