The DCEU has found the time to introduce multiple friendships throughout its movies. Here are some that got their due and some that fans need more of.
Superheroes might sometimes look all-powerful but even they appreciate the company and friendships of other people, heroes or no heroes. The DCEU is no exception to this rule. Even though it's mostly focused on the heroes fighting a great evil, the fictional universe has also found the time to introduce multiple friendships.
Some of them are downright iconic thanks to their status in comic books while others might not be as familiar to people. Whatever the case, the DCEU doesn't quite give the same space to all the friendships it creates. As a result, some of them feel rather overlooked in comparison to others.
When Diana came to the world of men, her two closest people were Steve Trevor and Etta Candy who worked as Steve's secretary. Diana and Etta immediately hit it off because Etta was just as honest as the Amazon princess. And after Steve sacrificed his life, they presumably bonded even more.
Unfortunately, the DCEU didn't show much of their friendship. By the time Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) premiered, Etta had already died of old age. And all that was shown of her was a photo with Etta and Diana in Diana's home.
Harley meets multiple new people after her break-up with the Joker, but one of the most significant new friendships she strikes is with Dinah Lance aka Black Canary. At first, Dinah seems irritated by Harley.
Things start to turn around when Dinah decides to cast her neutrality aside and saves Harley from a man who wants to kidnap her. From there on, they slowly but surely begin forming a tentative friendship that would be amazing to see even more of in the future DCEU movies! But as far as their first outing is concerned a lot of quality time was spent on their friendship.
DCEU didn't really do justice to the friendship between Wonder Woman and Superman. In the comics, the two superheroes are close friends and often help out each other. They even dated for a while. But in the movies, they barely had any scenes together.
Superman didn't really get to know Wonder Woman and the same is true for her. Ironically, the closest they got to each other was when confused Superman fought Wonder Woman after his resurrection. It's a shame since their dynamic could have been wonderful.
Unlike Wonder Woman and Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman got quite a lot of space together in the DCEU. Even though the films had them flirt with each other a little, they remained friends in the end, and that works too.
Wonder Woman and Batman first met when Diana infiltrated Lex Luthor's party, just like Bruce Wayne did. They were the founding members of the Justice League and even though they sometimes argued, they still supported each other.
It's true that Superman and Batman had a lot of scenes together in the DCEU. But in most of these scenes, they were hostile to each other. From their first meeting at Lex Luthor's party to their fight in Justice League (2017), the two superheroes have nothing akin to their iconic friendship in the comics.
In the source material, Batman and Superman have a grudging respect for each other at first and then become truly close friends.
When Steve died, Diana mostly closed herself off from the rest of the world. Yet she strikes a hesitant friendship with her work colleague Barbara Minerva. Their initial meet-cute (almost like one from a rom-com) leads to the women spending time together and just talking.
They help out each other until Barbara gets too absorbed by her transformation into Cheetah. That's when her friendly feelings toward Diana turn into anger and they end up fighting.
While it might be a stretch to call them friends, Cyborg and the Flash were friendly in the original version of the Justice League. But just like other potential friendships, they didn't have a lot of scenes together.
They were forced to work side by side and by the end of it, Victor was more relaxed in Barry's presence. Yet it would be nice to see more of their banter and bonding in the future.
From initial hostility and distrust to mutual friendship and respect, Harley's and Cassandra's friendship was one of the highlights of Birds of Prey (2020). Harley's motives with which she approaches Cassandra are far from altruistic at first.
She even goes to break Cassandra out of danger not because she wants to but because she needs the jewel Cassandra stole. However, the more time they spend with each other, the better they seem to get along. In the end, Harley and Cassandra are happily hanging out together and banter like old friends.
Batman and Alfred have a complex relationship in the comics. Alfred is Bruce's father figure, mentor, butler, and yes, even a friend.
The films so far didn't utilize Alfred that much, despite casting Jeremy Irons who has made many great films in the past. Perhaps it's because Alfred has no powers so he wasn't as central to the action, but even without them, he's a formidable person.
At first, it looks like Billy will have trouble getting attached to his new foster family. That changes when he and Freddy grow closer. They spend a lot of time together as Freddy is the one who helps Billy aka Shazam! master his new powers.
They fall out for a time when Shazam acts too arrogant but they reconcile and fight side by side in the end. Freddy even gets powers of his own which means he can hang out with Billy even more as a superhero.
