ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the league is expected to expand the regular season to 17 games and that it should be officially announced later this week. The game will be added at the end of the season, which will push the Super Bowl back to the second week of February. This would be the first change to the NFL schedule since 1978.
The extra week is obviously a win for the NFL and the owners, who will reap the benefits of an additional week of game revenue. That should also result in more money for the players moving forward, but it does come with a cost for them. The extra game is one additional chance for them to pick up an injury, and it will also diminish the prestige of any records or thresholds that are accomplished moving forward. Expect to see things like 2,000-yard rushers or 5,000-yard passers become much more frequent given the additional game.
This will also have an impact on fantasy leagues. The fantasy regular season will likely be expanded to 14 weeks before a three-week playoff.
