Jannik Vestergaard reacts to rumours Spurs want to sign him
It has been a less than successful season for Spurs in the centre of defence, with Jose Mourinho frequently chopping and changing between Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.
Therefore, it seems unsurprising that Tottenham have been linked to various new centre-back targets ahead of the summer transfer window.
Jannik Vestergaard of Southampton has been one such name in recent weeks, with the Mirror reporting Tottenham’s interest earlier this month.
The Dane, currently an international teammate of Spurs’ Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, has a contract that expires in 2022, meaning that he enters the final year of his deal this summer.
This is a similar position to the one that Hojbjerg was in himself last summer when he made the move from the South Coast to N17. Vestergaard is currently valued at £16.2m by TransferMarkt.
Vestergaard was interviewed by Tipsbladet this week and they asked him directly about the rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham (Sport Witness).
He said: “I can only say that of course, it’s always a pat on the back with stories of interest from other big clubs, but right now I have a contract with Southampton. So, it’s not something I can talk about.
“I focus on the matches in the Premier League, on the FA Cup cup semi-final at Wembley and now the important matches with the national team.
“Good stats don’t win matches in themselves, but they give a picture that I have done well for a long period of time. That I am doing something right, and I am glad that the numbers reflect the level that I myself feel I deliver.
“In fact, I feel that I have been stable at the same level – as the best version of myself – for over a year now, because I also finished really well last season.”
