Even though it's all about personal preference, some Animal Crossing characters are generally avoided by different players for different reasons.
In Animal Crossing players can meet hundreds of different villagers and special characters. The key of the game is establishing a connection with the characters who come through the town in order to turn it into a thriving community. Keeping a good relationship with all of them, though, has always been a challenge for the players. With New Horizon this hasn’t changed, and choosing which gibberish-sounding animal players want to establish residence on their island can be a difficult task. The perfect Animal Crossing characters are almost unanimously agreed upon to be one of the cutest and nicest ones, while the Animal Crossing characters that players choose to ignore are not as easily detectable.
Snooty villagers are possibly the worst villagers in Animal Crossing. They are vain, rude and gossipy, and their design often portraits their unpleasant attitude, with mean smiles and judgmental eyes. Some of them are more tolerable, while others are just plain terrible. This is the case with Eloise, Francine, and Bitty, three colorful chibi animals who somehow managed to be hated by almost every New Horizons player. It’s not fun to be around this Animal Crossing personality type, especially when they ask players to do something for them and, when they do it, the Snooty villagers act like they're bothered. Sometimes it’s really hard not to hit them with a bug net.
Players are not usually fans of cranky New Horizons villagers either, with few exceptions, since they’re always yelling or saying mean stuff. Animal Crossing characters like Angus or Octavian don’t seem like the types of villagers that would give players medicine for a bee sting. There are also Animal Crossing villagers with a creepy vibe and, when characters aren’t given a very good appearance to begin with, players tend to focus on something else, cuter and more aesthetically pleasing.
Coco, for example, with those empty eyes staring at the void and her sandy skin, looks like one of those characters that players expect to find behind them holding an axe. Then there’s Pietro, the sheep who’s always complaining about not being cool enough, with his clown-like aesthetics that really doesn’t help much, since coulrophobia is pretty common.
Since the first Animal Crossing, players have loved to hate Mr. Resetti, even if he has been toned down through the years. He is a cranky mole who appears to lecture the players every time they reset the game without saving it first. It might seem amusing (and shocking) the first time, but it quickly becomes annoying especially when trying to restart the game after the Nintendo DS battery died, and Mr. Resetti just won’t go away. With New Horizon, avoiding Resetti has become easier thanks to the Switch's auto-save function.
The reasons why players avoid some characters in Animal Crossing are subjective. Someone may not like arrogant New Horizons villagers, others may dislike snobs and know-it-alls. Sometimes, however, players ignore Animal Crossing characters because they simply don’t care about them. Maybe there is nothing remarkable about certain villagers; with over three hundred to choose from, some will undoubtedly be just bland and uninteresting. Some conversations are not worth reading, and being boring is not the kind of thing most people think of when they're trying to compile their list of favorites. Building a friendship with nice and funny Animal Crossing characters is just more rewarding.
