TikTok is a hugely popular app, but just how many people use the platform? Although TikTok is a much newer network compared to many of the other social media services, it has quickly built up a loyal and dedicated user base. This is to the point where downloads are spoken about in terms of billions and active users in the hundreds of millions.
TikTok officially launched in 2016. However, the company that owns TikTok, ByeDance, purchased Musical.ly in 2017 before eventually combining Musical.ly with TikTok in 2018. Since then, TikTok has continued to expand in popularity thanks to its viral content and the app shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Back in May of 2020, TikTok passed the two-billion download marker, making it one of only a few apps to have achieved the dizzy heights. However, downloads apply to devices in general and as individual people have access to more than one device, that’s not a real representation of just how many use the platform. While an official number on this remains unreleased by ByteDance, there are some indications of just how many people use TikTok. For example, Statista points to more than 21 million daily active users on iOS and 12 million daily active users on Android. They are just the daily numbers, with indications last year pointing to around 800 million monthly active users overall. Again, as that figure was suggested last year, the true number is likely to be even higher now in 2021.
As impressive as 800+ million monthly active users sounds, that might not even be the complete picture. Besides not knowing how many exactly, TikTok is not the only app to keep in mind. For example, TikTok is an international app with Douyin being the China domestic equivalent. Due to this, the numbers stated simply refer to just TikTok. With Douyin specifically catering to ByteDance’s home market, it too has already generated massive downloads and attracted a substantial number of users. A report from CNBC highlighted that as of August 2020, Doujin Had 600 million daily active users of its own.
Whichever way it is measured or lines are drawn, the one overwhelming and consistent theme is that TikTok is a hit app and one that’s used by millions of people every day. Whether it’s in China, the U.S. or elsewhere, TikTok remains a dominant force in not only the social media market, but apps in general. Furthermore, with TikTok seemingly having put many of its recent troubles behind it, the number of downloads and active TikTok users are likely to only continue to increase throughout 2021 and beyond.
