Skydiver falls to his death after parachute fails to open during competition
A 30-year-old skydiver died after his parachute failed to open during a competition.
The man was performing a solo wingsuit jump at Jurien Bay in Perth, Australia, at 1.30pm yesterday during the Virtual Nationals Skydiving Competition.
The man was ‘very experienced’ and was performing a ‘high level’ jump, according to local media. But his parachute failed to open correctly.
Emergency crews rushed to help but he died at the scene.
‘Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends,’ a spokesperson for company Skydive Jurien Bay said.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Parachute Federation will carry out an investigation into exactly what happened.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Jurien Bay is a popular area in Australia for skydiving, but this is not the first time someone has been injured or killed at the hotspot.
A man in his 20s fractured his leg during a ‘hard landing’ while skydiving there in 2019.
He was airlifted to hospital for injuries which were not life-threatening.
