My girlfriend didn’t introduce me to her ex at their daughter’s birthday party

DEAR DEIDRE: MY girlfriend didn’t introduce me to her ex at their daughter’s birthday party – and there were only six of us there.

I feel so let down that she didn’t acknowledge our relationship properly.

When I hear her talking to him on the phone it’s like she has airbrushed me out of their lives. She denies it but I think she is still emotionally attached to him and doesn’t want to hurt his feelings. 

I’m 35 and my girlfriend’s 38. We’ve been together for ten months.

She was with her ex for five years, but they ended their relationship ten years ago. Their daughter is 15 and I get on well with her.

This is enough for me to want to finish my relationship. Am I right or am I overreacting?

I don’t feel my girlfriend respects or listens to me. I know he’s her child’s dad, but she seems to favour him over me.

DEIDRE SAYS: Her daughter is a constant reminder of her previous relationship.

Even if you have accepted her child as “part of the package”, you probably didn’t count on her ex being part of it.

You need to let your girlfriend know her behaviour bothers you.

She might have wanted to avoid what she expected to be an awkward situation at the  party.

But if her behaviour still makes you feel uncomfortable, then perhaps it is time to call it a day. If she isn’t ready to move on, you won’t be able to either.
