WandaVision's director explains the role Elizabeth Olsen had in designing the new Scarlet Witch costume that made its epic debut in the show's finale.
Here's how Elizabeth Olsen helped design WandaVision's new Scarlet Witch costume. WandaVision was Marvel's first television series on Disney+ and quickly became a massive hit with critics and fans alike. The story centered on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) coming to terms over losing Vision (Paul Bettany) and fully accepting her role as the legendary Scarlet Witch.
Wanda's final form so to speak was first teased in episode eight, "Previously On," where Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) takes Wanda back on an emotional trauma tour of her past. In one memory, Wanda is still a HYDRA experiment, and comes face-to-face with the Mind stone, which gives her a vision of her future as the Scarlet Witch. Although Agatha is clearly against Wanda fully accepting her destiny as the Scarlet Witch, she ironically helps Wanda actually own her new role in episode nine, "The Series Finale." Wanda takes her own chaos magic back from Agatha and Agatha's own magic, which culminates in Wanda truly becoming the Scarlet Witch with an epic new costume.
WandaVision director Matt Shakman revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that Olsen did have a hand in the new Scarlet Witch costume design. Shakman said that Olsen had some thoughts on the outfit during an initial fitting. Check out how Olsen's input led to the final design below.
"She [Olsen] is so practical that she immediately put it on and she was like, "OK, I can do this move and I can't do this move. And I need to be able to do this move." We were like, "Great!" So then we have to re-engineer it, because those suits are tough. I mean, it's one thing to look amazing. It's another thing to actually function. And she knows what she has to do better than anybody, having done this for years now. She's so adept at the physical work -- she's beyond adept at every part of her job -- so she was quickly picking apart how it would work."
The end result was completely epic. It's certainly inevitable that the classic comic Scarlet Witch costume and the WandaVision costume will be popular Halloween costumes later this year. What's really inspiring about the new Scarlet Witch costume design is how it symbolized Wanda finally taking control of her life. After all, she had assigned roles to the citizens of Westview that they didn't want in order to escape in her grief. By setting the citizens free and finally accepting her grief, Wanda was able to fully embrace her role as the Scarlet Witch.
The most important thing is that it was her choice, and her new costume is a powerful visual symbol of Wanda taking full control of her life. WandaVision in many ways is the true origin story for the Scarlet Witch. It wasn't about Wanda forgetting about her grief, but accepting it and choosing to move forward, and she looked every inch the superhero while doing so.
