‘Got a job to finish’ – Pundit believes Spurs will struggle to attract potential Mourinho replacement
Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has said that Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to swap Leicester City for Tottenham Hotspur given the squad he has managed to assemble at the King Power Stadium.
Reports indicate that Jose Mourinho is under pressure to turn around results quickly if he is to keep his job at Spurs next season.
Potential replacements for the Portuguese coach have been mooted including RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann and Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Daily Record claimed on Wednesday that Spurs have even sounded out Brendan Rodgers through a third party about the possibility of taking over in North London next season.
The report did not reveal whether the 48-year-old showed any interest in swapping the Leicester job for the Tottenham hot seat
Whelan believes that Rodgers is building something special with the Foxes and that the former Celtic coach still has unfinished business at the club.
When asked about Rodgers being offered the Spurs job, the pundit told Football Insider: “It’s a very tempting offer. As a manager and a player, you’re always looking for that next chapter, that next challenge.
“Brendan Rodgers has assembled such a great team there, organised and great to watch. They’re great going forward and there’s excitement in that midfield area generated by Barnes and Maddison.
“It really is a joy to watch Leicester these days and that is down to the manager, his tactics and the way he likes to set up his players.
“Take nothing away from Brendan Rodgers, he’s been at big clubs before. Celtic, Liverpool, he knows what it’s all about. He knows how to run things and he’s a manager that many clubs would be tempted to try and prize away. But right now he’s just enjoying life at Leicester.
“He’s still got a job to finish. I don’t think he’ll be thinking about anything else but the next game. It would be very hard to persuade him to go to Spurs because he’s got backup from the board, they’ve got great facilities and fantastic players.
“It’s down to the manager, isn’t it? Does he want a new challenge? But he still has lots to do at Leicester. They could be in the Champions League next year.”

I do get the feeling that Rodgers is extremely ambitious and would be open to a move to a bigger club in the future. However, the 48-year-old has only been at Leicester for two years and he will certainly believe that he could achieve a lot more than he has at the King Power Stadium with the squad he has built. So even if Mourinho is sacked, attracting Rodgers will be next to impossible at the moment.
