Fabrizio Romano reveals ‘final decision’ on Spurs midfielder will be made next week

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has admitted that a decision will be made on Gedson Fernandes’ future this week, with Tottenham Hotspur open to cutting the midfielder’s loan spell short.

The Portuguese midfielder arrived at Spurs a year ago on an 18-month loan deal, with the North Londoners having the option to make the deal permanent at the end of his spell.

While the 22-year-old did get a few opportunities to impress last season, he has barely been involved so far during the current campaign.

Due to the club’s issues with fulfilling the non-homegrown player limit in Europe, Fernandes was not named in Tottenham’s Europa League squad for the group stages, which Jose Mourinho admitted was one of the reasons the youngster has played so little.

The Tottenham boss has already confirmed that the club are open to letting the Portugal Under-21 international return to his parent club this month and another loan move to Torino has been suggested as a possibility for the midfielder.

Romano has now confirmed that the Serie A club have opened talks with Benfica over signing Fernandes on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

With the COVID suspension last season and our issues with fulfilling the foreign-trained player rule, circumstances conspired against Gedson to take away any chance he had of impressing at Spurs. He has much more in his locker than he had a chance to showcase over the last year and I would not be surprised if he went on to have a solid career.
