Coronavirus: Three people die, total number of cases goes beyond 30,000 (updated)

Three people died from the coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total number of deaths so far to 186, the ministry of health announced on Sunday.

At the same time 130 positive results (a positivity rate of 1.75 per cent) were detected among 7,740 tests, bringing the total since March to 30,017.

At the same time there are 173 people in hospital, 55 of whom are in serious condition.

The three people who died all had underlying health conditions. They are a 77-year-old man who was in Famagusta hospital, a 94-year-old man who was in Nicosia general hospital and an 83-year-old man who was in the intensive care unit of Nicosia general.

Of the 186 who have died so far 125 (67 per cent) were men and 61 women. The average age of death is 80.

Of the 55 people in a serious condition in the island’s hospitals 30 are intubated, five are in intensive care but not intubated and 20 are in high dependency units.

Fifty four of these patients are in Famagusta hospital, 64 in Nicosia, 53 in Limassol and two in the Makarios hospital in Nicosia.

Of the 7,740 tests carried out on Sunday, 1,422 were PCR tests.

Forty of the positive results came from 325 tests carried out as part of contact tracing, while 23 were the result of 764 tests taken on private initiative.

Three cases were found among 69 tests at general hospitals and one was found among 264 tests ordered by GPs. Sixty three were found among 6,318 rapid tests.

Of these 1,738 were carried out in Limassol where 15 positive cases were found (a 0.86 positivity rate), 865 in Larnaca with 19 positives (2.2 per cent), 2,984 in Nicosia with 14 positive cases (0.47 per cent), 307 in Paphos with eight positives (2.61 per cent), and 247 in Famagusta with two positives (0.81 per cent). Five cases were also found in Limassol care homes.
