Journalist provides details on rumoured Tottenham target’s contract stalemate
Spanish journalist, Guillem Balague has explained that Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos are still amidst a contract standoff, with the Spanish giants refusing to agree to the terms the legendary defender is demanding.
Ramos is said to be one of the central defenders on Tottenham’s radar this month as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his backline (Evening Standard).
AS previously reported that the 34-year-old was trying to get the best terms possible since this was likely to be his last big contract, while Madrid were looking to make significant cuts in player salaries due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marca even claimed that the World Cup winner had rejected a one-year extension offered by the club.
Balague has now said that Los Blancos want Ramos to take a 10 per cent salary cut, which he is refusing to do.
He also confirmed that that the Spanish international wants a two-year deal while Real Madrid are only willing to offer him a one-year extension.
When asked about the situation regarding Ramos’ contract, the journalist said on his YouTube channel: “The situation is clear. Sergio Ramos wants a two-year deal and to stay in the same wages, €12 million (£10.67 million) net.
“Real Madrid are saying, ‘Only one year and you have to reduce 10% of your wages because that’s what everybody is going to get reduced’.”

The fact that multiple sources are reporting that there is a contract standoff between Ramos and Real Madrid suggests that there is some truth to the reports. However, I would still expect the two parties to come to an agreement as I cannot see Real Madrid letting their captain go, particularly considering that he continues to be an important part of Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
