Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Igor Zhovkva said that the Ukrainian authorities will support “the transformation of the military mission into a civilian” on the territory of Transnistria.
“Ukraine will never oppose the process of turning the so-called military peacekeeping mission into a civilian, police one under the auspices of one or another international organization”, – Zhovkva said.
He also stressed that the issue of resolving the situation in Transnistria was discussed by President of Moldova Maia Sandu and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during Sandu’s official visit.
According to experts, the withdrawal of the peacekeeping mission from the territory of Transnistria could result in significant destabilization of the situation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that it was the Russian military who “stopped the hot phase of the conflict in the region” and has since kept it in a “frozen but not fatal state”.
Ukraine intends to support Sandu in the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria
