WandaVision's first episode offers clues into Wanda's immense power and control. Here's how the dinner scene sets up Scarlet Witch's future actions.

In its first episode, WandaVision provided its audience with the most awkward and deadly dinner - a scene that could hint at Scarlet Witch’s impending disaster. The series hinges on a mystery that sees Wanda and Vision trapped inside a world of sitcoms, one that shifts to a new decade of television with every episode. While it’s unclear who is controlling the situation, there are clues that Wanda is at least a big part of what’s going on.
Wanda Maximoff and Vision have settled down in Westview and, hoping to land a promotion at work, Vision invites his boss and his wife — Mr. and Mrs. Hart — over for dinner. Everything is going rather smoothly after Wanda uses some magic to whip together some food for the unexpected guests. However, when Mr. Hart asks the couple why Wanda and Vision have come to Westview, they apparently can’t remember. When Mr. Hart gets aggressive about demanding answers, Wanda looks at him suddenly and he begins choking on his food. Mrs. Hart repeatedly tells him to stop it, but without moving an inch to help her struggling husband. Wanda and Vision also seem frozen, until the Scarlet Witch sobers momentarily and commands her husband to save Mr. Hart. It’s a disturbing moment amid the quirky fluff and shenanigans that preceded the scene.
The implication is that Wanda’s magic is so powerful that she can control the people around her to maintain the illusion of a picture-perfect life. Any threat to the world she may have created is met with disastrous consequences. It’s no coincidence that Mr. Hart choked on his food immediately after asking, “Why did you come here?” He became more and more agitated because Wanda and Vision couldn’t answer his question, but also perhaps because he was desperate enough to start breaking character. While the façade of Wanda’s life in Westview is meant to be surreal, it’s possible that Mr. and Mrs. Hart are actual people who live in the town and have been transported into Wanda's world by circumstance - forced to play out the roles she's chosen for them, or else.
This would explain why Mr. Hart’s near-death experience felt so real. He was in pain and Mrs. Hart looked rather rattled by the whole ordeal - though in the moment she was forced to continue laughing and pretending it was all a joke. Wanda is an incredibly powerful witch and this scene is indicative of why S.W.O.R.D. is trying to stop her. If Wanda is able to control everyone the way she did Mr. Hart, then it’s possible that her surreal sitcom bubble will have disturbing ramifications in the real world as well. Currently, agents of S.W.O.R.D. are trying to reach her and she keeps purposely ignoring any and all warning signs.
Considering the speed with which Wanda and Vision’s relationship is advancing, it’s likely that Scarlet Witch’s abilities will grow even more powerful in a bid to maintain this illusion. At this rate, there’s no telling what she could do next. Will she zap the Westview citizens out of existence if they question her backstory, and could it affect the outside world? Suffice to say that Wanda’s current state is rather precarious and her firm grip on the sitcom reality in WandaVision could threaten to destroy the real world itself.
