Doctor Who Star John Barrowman Has A Life-Size Dalek in His Kitchen
John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, has a life-size Dalek in his kitchen. Barrowman first appeared on the long-running science fiction series in 2005. He played a role in seasons 1, 3, and 4. Barrowman also starred in the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood, which aired from 2006-2011. He recently returned for an appearance as Captain Jack in Doctor Who season 12. Before that, he was last seen on the show in 2010, marking a decade-long absence.
Barrowman will again reprise his role in the series' holiday special, "Revolution of the Daleks." It airs January 1 on BBC America. Though Barrowman isn't confirmed to appear in any additional episodes beyond the special, he's expressed interest in another return. In fact, the actor shared he hopes the special performs well, as it could increase the chances he's asked back. Filming on season 13 began last month, so it seems likely news about it would come out sooner rather than later. Barrowman has long been vocal about his appreciation for Doctor Who as both a fan and cast member.
As revealed in an interview with TV Insider, Barrowman even has a life-size Dalek in his Palm Springs kitchen. The actor discussed his return in the holiday special as well, talking about what it feels like to be back in the world of Doctor Who:
Even though the TARDIS is different, when I step into it, the heart of the TARDIS is the same, the heart of the Doctor is the same and the soul of the show is still the same. This character, this show, and what it stands for mean so much to me.
Considering Barrowman's enthusiasm for the show, it's not too surprising his love is represented at home. The Dalek in his kitchen likely serves two purposes for Barrowman, honoring both his enjoyment of Doctor Who and the wonderful time he's had working on it. The actor's debut as Captain Jack was roughly 15 years ago, and the show has clearly had a big impact on his life since then. It makes sense his home decorating choices reflect that.
Additionally, despite the changes to Doctor Who over the years, it's clear from Barrowman's comments his feelings for the show remain the same. He hones in on what makes the series great, which is its spirit remains intact regardless of the Doctor's number. It's built to withstand change while still serving as satisfying comfort food for the audience. It's an especially impressive aspect of Doctor Who that has clearly meant a lot to Barrowman. Though his future as Captain Jack Harkness remains a mystery at this time, Barrowman's love for both the character and the series at large shows no signs of slowing down.
