Also moonlighting as the producer for Bollywood Wives, Karan is the one who actually stirs the pot and brings the first slivers of drama to the screen. But off-screen too, Karan is synonymous with creating some of the biggest and most dramatic movies in India, apart from starting some controversies of his own. For those who love Bollywood, Karan Johar is pretty much a household name. The popular director-producer Karan who's real name is "Rahul" is not just a celebrated “dream maker” for the industry’s many notable stars, but also an icon when it comes to flaunting the best in fashion. Born in Mumbai on May 25, 1972, Karan is the only-son to late film producer father Yash Johar and mother Hiroo. The late Yash Johar was a legendary filmmaker himself, having given Bollywood many memorable movies featuring the lavish sets and exotic locations he was best known for. At 48, Karan now owns Dharma Productions, the house of films such as Agneepath, which incidentally also featured Neelam Kothari Soni, Dostana, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Duplicate.
At the age of 17, Karan stepped into the industry by playing Shrikant in the 1989 show Indradhanush. But it was in 1995 that Karan really took on the reigns of directing by being Aditya Chopra’s assistant in the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge where he also had a cameo. Karan’s first job as a director was romantic comedy-drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a '90s cult film starring Shah Rukh, Rani Mukerji, and Kajol. With his penchant for the letter “K,” Karan, who holds a master's degree in French, went on to create Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kaal, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Not only did Karan win accolades from the public, but he also took home prestigious Indian awards for Best Director, Best Dialogue, Best Story, and also Best Costume Director. The latest in Karan’s long list of hits is Kylie Jenner look-a-like Janhvi Kapoor’s Dhadak, Simmba, and Student of the Year.
The Fabulous Lives cast-member Karan also hosts his own chat show called Koffee with Karan where he interviews and gossips with the who’s who of Bollywood while putting them in the spot for his rapid-fire rounds. Karan also happens to be infamous for getting into quite a few feuds including one with director Ram Gopal Verma. A recent chain of events, in fact, put Karan’s name in the limelight for which he received criticism for allegedly promoting nepotism in Bollywood. In his most recent controversy, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar called out fellow director Karan and his business partner Apoorva Mehta for allegedly taking away the title of his film Bollywood Wives and "tweaking" it as per their suitability to make it Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives. As per Yahoo News, Karan’s estimated net worth is more than $200 million (or Rs. 1,400 crores) and he charges approximately $406,000 to direct a movie.
On the personal front, the Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives star says he’s not “embarrassed” but “proud” of his sexual orientation. Karan’s sexuality has been fodder for tabloids for several years, but he did become a father to twin babies Yash, a boy, and Roohi, a daughter, named after his parents in February 2017.
