Anonymous note labels woman ‘Grinch’ for not putting up Christmas lights
A partially sighted woman was sent an anonymous card from a neighbour telling her that she was ‘lazy’ and a ‘Grinch’ for not putting lights outside her house.
Carrie Fielding, from Melksham in Wiltshire, uses a guide dog and said she hadn’t put up lights this year because of health issues.
The card, on green paper, had a picture of the Dr Suess character on the front and read: ‘To the Grinch neighbor of Bader Park, Well done! You have been nominated the neighborhood Grinch of Bader Park. From your neighbours who love Christmas.’
It added: ‘Can’t you see all you’re neighbors in Bader Park made an effort to brighten up the culdesack and all put Christmas lights to cheer everyone up after such a bad year! Don’t be lazy! Get in the Christmas spirit! Put up some lights![sic]’
Carrie, 56, told Metro.co.uk that she lives alone and is spending Christmas by herself for the first time ever this year except for guide dog Mike.
She said that thankfully, the nasty sentiment from whoever sent the card had been outweighed by hundreds of messages of support after what happened was shared on Facebook.
‘The positive response I have received has shown my neighbour up for the real Grinch in our street,’ she said.
‘I have had a huge group of my neighbours get together to buy a Christmas hamper for me and my guide dog, Mike, as well as a huge bunch of flowers.
‘I’ve had offers to light up my house so planes can navigate by it.
‘However, the best thing coming out of this horrible act is that the JustGiving page for guide dogs that me and Mike support is getting donations, so helping another partially sighted person have help.
‘It would be amazing if the page gets lots of donations.’
She said that she appreciated the offer from people to decorate her house, but added: ‘I’m leaving it as it is. The person organising the lights told me that lots of people wanted to give him money towards buying lights and I asked that they donate to the Justgiving page.’
