James Gunn Confirmed as a Writer on Looney Toons Movie Coyote vs. Acme
James Gunn has been confirmed as a writer for the Looney Toons movie Coyote vs. Acme. The Wile E. Coyote vs. The Road Runner shorts started in 1949, during the golden age of Looney Toons cartoons. Chuck Jones shaped incredibly simple narratives, which saw the Coyote trying to capture The Road Runner, only to fail, often due to the traps he would purchase from the Acme Company. As far back as 2010, Warner Bros. have been planning a film based around the Acme Company, but in recent years, the live-action-animation-hybrid of Coyote vs. Acme has been taking shape. Jon and Josh Silberman came on board as writers, and last year, Dave Green joined as the director. Now, there is confirmation of an exciting addition to the writing team.
A report from Deadline, which provided release dates for upcoming Warner Bros. projects, including Coyote vs. Acme, also confirmed that The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is one of the writers for Green’s film, alongside Jon and Josh Silberman, Jeremy Slater, and Samy Burch. In addition to that, it’s reported that their screenplay is not only based on “Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons,” but also “the fictional New Yorker magazine article entitled “Coyote v. Acme,” written by Ian Frazier.”
The addition of Gunn will likely enhance the excitement for Coyote vs. Acme, as Gunn has a knack for taking obscure narratives and characters and adding a level of depth one would not have previously foreseen. Interestingly, the screenplay also takes inspiration from the amusing New Yorker article, which has Wile E. Coyote battling the Acme Company in a court case, and one can imagine Gunn is someone who would enjoy bringing such a humorous scenario to the big screen. The writer/director is, of course, one of many writers, but his inclusion is still an exciting one. Coyote vs. Acme will release in 2023, after the next film featuring the Looney Toons, Space Jam 2. Now, with the addition of Gunn, it will be interesting to see how well Coyote vs. Acme comes together.
