Breonna Taylor talked about hopes for Christmas 2020 in resurfaced tweet
A tweet posted by Breonna Taylor last December has resurfaced and is stirring up emotions about the 26-year-old's untimely death.
Taylor, who was shot and killed during a botched police raid in Kentucky last March, has become a central figure in the debate over police accountability.
On Dec. 18, a user on Twitter uncovered a tweet made by Taylor on Christmas in 2019. The tweet was later reposted to Reddit, where one user described seeing it as "a gut punch."
In the tweet, Taylor discusses her future hopes of having children to celebrate the holidays with.
"I hope next Christmas I have a kid so I can be super excited about today like y'all," she wrote.
With Christmas just around the corner following a tumultuous year, the tweet is gaining widespread attention. Users are expressing their sympathies and discussing the case. "This hurts... I think about her and her mom's unanswered call for justice," user @soulful_chica wrote.
Officers were carrying out a no-knock search warrant (police later claimed they knocked) in a case related to Taylor's ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover. Kenneth Walker, Taylor's boyfriend, opened fire after reportedly believing the home was being broken into.
Police responded by unloading more than 20 rounds into the apartment, striking Taylor multiple times.
A grand jury ultimately charged one officer on three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for shots that struck a neighboring apartment. No officers, however, were charged in Taylor's death.
Since then, the case has taken a series of painful turns. Incredibly, one of the officers involved in the killing filed a civil suit against Walker for emotional distress, assault, and battery in relation to the night of the shooting.
Another officer drew outrage after his friends and family set up a crowdfunding effort for his retirement on a Christian website.
"This got me crying and shit," another user added in response to Taylor's resurfaced tweet. "I'm so sorry we can't even get you justice. I am so sorry."
Taylor's death led to widespread protest across the globe and brought the conversation surrounding the use of force by law enforcement to the forefront.
