From flippers to punching gloves, the new obstacles comng to Season 3 of Fall Guys look hilariously chaotic and on-point for the season's theme.
Season 3 of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout looks like its obstacles will be hilariously chaotic, with developer Mediatonic introducing new levels and hazards. The upcoming wintry season of the popular new battle royale game was shown earlier this week at The Game Awards. While Season 2 adhered to a medieval theme filled with axes, castles, and knights, Season 3 is entirely winter- and holiday-themed.
In Fall Guys, players control their own customizable Fall Guys (also known as Beans) and traverse obstacle courses in a game-show-esque fashion. Some of these obstacle courses take the form of races, in which only a certain amount of players can qualify for the next round. Other styles of gameplay include hunts and survival. The last player standing is the winner, which is symbolized with their own golden crown. Season 2 is the current season, and it's been available since early October.
In an IGN interview with Mediatonic level designer Joseph "J.J." Juson, several brand-new obstacles were shown off. These obstacles include flippers, punch gloves, ice tiles, snowballs, and fans, and they'll join the game starting tomorrow when Season 3 begins. Flippers on the ground will catapult a Fall Guy into the sky, and punch gloves (as their name suggests) punch the player off-course, if not entirely off the course. Ice tiles are comparable to the game's existing Hex-A-Gone tiles, but now they're now more dynamic and thematically slippery. Meanwhile, fans blast the players away from the goal, while snowballs cascade down hills to push them back and generally wreak havoc. Much like real life, snowballs also accumulate snow as they roll and become larger.
Although some of these obstacles are variations on existing obstacles, most of them are completely new. Juson says in the brief interview that he was particularly interested in merging two or more of these obstacles to see what kind of chaos comes into fruition. However, after play-testing, he found that there is just a thing as too much chaos. He shares that, despite all of the innate pandemonium of Fall Guys' gameplay, he still wants players to still feel like they have some degree of autonomy.
When looking at these obstacles, it's easy to see how they will prove to be simultaneously frustrating and hilarious, and that mixture is what makes Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout such an intriguing game. Even if a players is way behind and getting knocked about everywhere, it's still incredibly funny to watch and experience. Although the axes, castles, and spikes from Season 2 will be missed, these winter-themed obstacles in Season 3 look like pure fun. Alongside the new obstacles and levels, the new costumes look appealing, as well. Players can don winter gear or dress up as a snowman, penguin, and more, which will surely soften the sting of getting launched off of a level for the nth time.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is available on PS4 and PC.
