Fairbairn is also charged with five counts of possession of a firearm, Cambs Police confirmed.
He was held after returning to a police station on bail yesterday.
The charges relate to Fairbairn being shot in the stomach in July in Enfield, North London.
He was reportedly confronting a gang threatening to torch EastEnders star Gillian’s home.
Gillian and Mr Fairbairn split in December, 2019, after dating on and off for four years.
The pair remained close but Fairbairn was said to be heartbroken because his ex-fiancee has not contacted him since the attack.
He is said to have told a pal: “How can someone I cared so much about not care if I’m OK?”
Cambridge Police said: “A man is due in court charged with a number of offences including possession of firearms.
“David Fairbairn, 65, of Arrington returned to Parkside Police Station on bail yesterday (7 December).
“He has since been charged with five counts of possession of firearms and driving while disqualified.
“He has also been charged by the Metropolitan Police for perverting the course of justice and is due to appear virtually at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court today.”
