Monster Squad Doc Trailer Highlights Cult Classic Status
The upcoming Monster Squad documentary, Wolfman’s Got Nards, released a trailer highlighting the depths of the film’s cult legacy. Released in 1987, Monster Squad is a horror-comedy film that follows a group of misfit pre-teens in a small suburban town who face down with classic horror movie villains who they used to worship. Although it was a flop in the box office, over the past few decades, the film has amassed a monstrous cult following. This Monster Squad cult inspired the documentary because one of the film’s stars, Andre Gower, wanted to explore the deep appreciation and community surrounding the film.
Released by Gravitas Ventures, the trailer is a montage of various interviews with the Monster Squad creators, and fans depict how the documentary is directly examining the community that has cherished the film over the past thirty years. They show how Gower went to Monster Squad revival screenings in theaters across the nation to meet with the fans directly. The trailer asks, “How does a squad become a cult? Monster Squad is one of the many cult classic films whose admiration did not come until much after its release. Although the success of movies at the box office is dependent on a variety of factors, this documentary explores how films can survive in the long term by growing into their audience decades later. This is happening most recently with Jennifer’s Body. Ten years after its release, the film fosters a cult community today after the film’s male-centered, hypersexualized marketing sabotaged its box office sales. With the Monster Squad documentary, Wolfman’s Got Gonads, it’s exciting to see Gower providing fans with the spotlight and a heartfelt return to what makes Monster Squad so important.
