Alli has fallen out of favour with Mourinho at Spurs and has seen his game time cut short, with the midfielder only racking up 105 minutes for the north London outfit since the season kicked off.
The-24-year-old started for Spurs on Thursday in their Europa League third-round qualifying clash against Shkendija, but had been left out of Tottenham’s previous two matchday squads, against Southampton and Lokomotiv Plovdiv, respectively.
Former Spurs stars such as Jermaine Jenas have stressed that all the signs lead to Alli leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium soon, but club legend Roberts insists the midfielder should stay and fight to get back in his boss’ good books.
The 61-year-old has complete confidence in Alli’s quality on the pitch and backed the England international to challenge for a place in Mourinho’s squad as he believes the player’s current period of poor form will soon pass.
Roberts took to Twitter and wrote: “Sorry JJ [Jenas].
“Always respect your views and always enjoy your punditry.
“If you are telling a top player to leave Spurs because he has a difficult period that’s crazy.
“Everyone has hard periods, add to that you are a Spursman.
“You like me should want him to fight for his place.”
The clock is ticking on the transfer window and all eyes will be on whether Alli is still at the club after 5th October.
