Aang's Original Team Avatar If He Didn't Go Into The Ice
Aang wouldn't have gone too far without Team Avatar by his side, but he could've had a different version of the team in Avatar: The Last Airbender if he never went into the ice. When Avatar Roku died, the Avatar Spirit was reincarnated in an Air Nomad, specifically Aang. Shortly afterward, Fire Lord Sozin attacked the Air Nation and annihilated them all - except for Aang, that is. Aang had been travelling with Appa and was ultimately encased in the ice near the Southern Water Tribe, where he hibernated for 100 years.
Katara and Sokka unwittingly found Aang when Katara unleashed her waterbending powers and broke the iceberg holding the Avatar. That's what kicked off Team Avatar's journey whether they knew it or not. Despite clashing with many people around the world, Aang, Katara, and Sokka's team eventually grew to include Toph in season 2 and Zuko in season 3, not to mention having Appa and Momo in the mix as well. But what if Aang never went into the ice and instead traveled the world at the start of the Hundred Year War, mastering the elements in order to defeat Fire Lord Sozin? What would his Team Avatar look like then?
Given that Aang had traveled around before the Hundred Year War began, he had some friends who were benders in those areas. In this case, Bumi would replace Toph as Team Avatar's earthbender and likely his eartbending teacher, while Kuzon would replace Zuko as the firebender of the group. It's unclear who would replace Katara as the waterbender or Sokka as the team's mastermind, but it's possible their great-grandparnets, Kanna's mother and father, could've taken on those roles since they would've been around the same age as Aang. Of course, Appa would still be around and Aang may have found another lemur to keep as a pet in Momo's place.
Although Aang's Team Avatar was the perfect partnership for him - and the world, for that matter - it's intriguing to consider the possibilities of how Aang's journey would have differed if he never flew away with Appa and Sozin failed in defeating the Air Nomads. Aang was the youngest airbending master for his time, and considering how powerful he became in The Last Airbender's short span of time, there's no telling how quickly he could have mastered the elements with the help of professional teachers. That's not to say Katara, Toph, and Zuko weren't great in their own ways; after all, Toph invented an entirely new substyle of earthbending. Bumi still managed to teach Aang a few things in his old age, showing him a new way to fight his battles.
One thing is for sure, Aang was the Avatar but Team Avatar was Earth's savior as a whole. The four nations wouldn't have been liberated if it weren't for all of them working together to defeat the Fire Nation and Fire Lord Ozai. And that success is what ultimately led to Korra forming her own Team Avatar in The Legend of Korra; perhaps it'll now become a part of the Avatar just like the Avatar Spirit and Cycle.
