Women’s TT champion Chloe Dygert loses control, goes over guard rail and falls down hill in terrifying cycling crash
CYCLING sensation Chloe Dygert went over the guard railings in a scary crash.
The American, 23, was competing in the Imola 2020 UCI Road World Championships and looking to defend the title she won a year ago.
But despite leading the time trial and being on course for victory, Dygert suffered a horror incident and was put out of the race.
On a fast descent, she tried to come around a bend but lost control, with a problem with her front wheel the likely cause.
It meant she wobbled straight into the barrier at the side of the road, with her bike buckling and sending her flipping over the top and down the hill on the other side in a terrifying moment.
Pictures from the scene showed the ace with blood across her legs.
It is understood Dygert was conscious and talking when treated by medics.
She was immediately taken to hospital in Imola, northern Italy where any injuries will be assessed.
USA Cycling tweeted: “Dygert was on track to win her second ITT World Championship, but has abandoned the race after her crash over the guard rail.
“All we know is that she is conscious and talking. More updates to come.”
Plenty of fans sent their best wishes on social media.
One said: “Saw the crash. So scary. Wish her a speedy recovery.”
Another wrote: “So many months of work gone in an instant… And she had the title in the bag today. I just hope that @chloedygert30 is ok.”
A final user added: “Wishing Chloe Dygert all the best following that nasty crash.. hope she’s ok.”
Dygert, who won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and is a ten-time world champion, was forced to withdraw from the race.
Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen claimed victory by 15 seconds on the 31.7km circuit.
