The Mandalorian Season 2 Could Change When Baby Yoda Uses The Force
The Mandalorian season 2 could show a different side of Baby Yoda and his usage of the Force. The first trailer for The Mandalorian season 2 has released, and it has Star Wars aficionados pouring over every detail, eager to decode what the show's next phase could have in store. Meanwhile, one of the biggest possible clues hiding in plain sight could directly relate to Baby Yoda's progression from the first season to the second.
As soon as The Mandalorian made its debut, Baby Yoda was one of the most adored new characters of the Disney era of Star Wars, with the hardened Mando's unlikely bond with him forming the basis for a very unique story in the franchise. The trailer for the second season shows the two continuing their journey from where they left off in season 1, but a quick moment featuring Baby Yoda in the trailer could actually be saying much more than it appears to be - especially considering the visual punchline that it is presented as.
At one point in The Mandalorian season 2 trailer, Mando gears up to battle a group of enemies - by engaging his whistling bird weapon on his wrist - he encounters in an underground fight club setting. Baby Yoda reacts to this by pushing the button to close the lid on the egg-shaped hovering carrier that he travels alongside Mando in. While obviously intended for a laugh, this is a big flip from Baby Yoda's response when Mando was in similar tight spots in season 1. In this particular case, Baby Yoda isn't attempting to use the Force and save Mando.
When Mando was attacked by the Mudhorn, Baby Yoda used the Force to stop the creature and even raise it off the ground. Similarly, Baby Yoda would also begin to Force choke Cara Dune when she was arm wrestling Mando, perceiving her to be a threat to him and only stopping due to Mando's intervention, and he would later block a Stormtrooper's flamethrower attack with his Force abilities, as well. In other words, Baby Yoda is clearly not reluctant to use his connection to the Force in both offensive and defensive ways if he senses a direct threat to himself or to Mando.
In the case of the snippet from the season 2 trailer, it could possibly be too much of a close-quarters conflict about to erupt with too many participants for Baby Yoda to aide Mando effectively. At the same time, having spent season 1 alongside Mando, it could also be that Baby Yoda is more willing to let him fight his own battles now, having seen firsthand his genuine skill in combat. The entirety of their experiences together so far may have also made Baby Yoda a little more of a pacifist with his Force abilities, seeing them now more as a tool of last resort in situations where Mando's demise is certain barring Baby Yoda's intervention.
Whatever the reasoning behind his retreat into his metallic shell, it's a notable shift from Baby Yoda's willingness to step in on Mando's behalf in season 1. Nonetheless, Baby Yoda having been so close to Mando throughout season 1 could have shifted his perspective somewhat on his powers from the Force, now seeing them as more of a nuclear option when every other means of defense on Mando's part has been exhausted. Still, while Baby Yoda's role may undergo a transition overall, it wouldn't be surprising for The Mandalorian season 2 to still feature an instance or two of Baby Yoda stepping in on his friend's behalf, even if it's now implemented more strategically on his part.
