Benoist said it had been “an honor portraying this iconic character” after The CW announced the news on Tuesday.

Taking to her Instagram page, the 31-year-old star, who first took on the role in 2015, wrote her heartfelt words as a caption to a laughing picture of her on the Supergirl set.

She said: “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement.

“Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.”

Benoist admitted: “She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united.

“What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

And promising that the show will go out with a bang, Benoist who announced her first pregnancy with husband Chris Wood in March, added: “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store.

“I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season. el mayarah @supergirlcw”.

She signed off her message using the Supergirl motto ‘el mayarah’, meaning ‘stronger together’ in Kryptonian.

Like many other productions, filming for Supergirl was halted due to the current pandemic.

But along with The CW’s Arrowverse shows – including The Flash and Batwoman – the show got the green light to resume filming in their Vancouver studios in Canada.

The pause on production led The CW to push back many of its usual autumn shows to midseason in January 2021.
