Boris Johnson ‘considering lifting rule of six for Christmas Day’
Boris Johnson is reportedly thinking about lifting the ‘rule of six’ for 24 hours on Christmas day.
The ban on groups of more than six people meeting inside or outside came into effect on Monday in an effort to stop coronavirus spreading between households.
Advisors were planning for the ‘rule of six’ to be in place for at least three months so it could end at the beginning of December, but have reportedly said the ban could be in place for a whole six months. The Government has warned that a second wave is ‘inevitable’ and has refused to rule out a national lockdown.
A source told the Sun: ‘The PM is anxious to avoid being portrayed as Scrooge.
‘He’s fully aware that millions of people are making big sacrifices to defeat this virus and is wondering ways to allow them to experience the joy of Christmas for at least part of the holiday season.’
The ‘rule of six’ is the Government’s attempt to curb the rise in cases that has taken place, particularly among young adults.
The Government is also worried that cases will continue to rise as winter approaches and the virus can spread more easily.
The UK currently has a total of 392, 845 confirmed coronavirus cases, 41, 848 deaths and an R rate between 1.1 and 1.4, meaning the number of cases could be doubling every seven to eight days.
