Photos from the set of Uncharted give fans their first look at Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully. Following on his successful (and still on-going) run as Spider-Man in the MCU, Holland will next dive into the world of video game movies in an adaptation of the popular Uncharted series from Naughty Dog.
An action-adventure game somewhat in the vein of Tomb Raider, Uncharted centers around a globe-trotting adventurer named Nathan Drake, a character very much modeled after Indiana Jones. Of course, in the games Drake is depicted as a man in his 40s, which makes it very interesting that the 24-year-old Holland is set to play him in the upcoming movie. Shifting Drake’s age for the film may be somewhat of a controversial decision, setting up the movie to disappoint fans, but there’s no questioning Holland’s popularity and Sony is clearly banking on him bringing Spider-Man fans to Uncharted to help establish a new franchise.
With filming on Uncharted now fully underway, the Twitter account Tom Holland News posted some behind-the-scenes images from the Berlin set showing Holland as the youthful Nathan Drake alongside Wahlberg as his mentor Sully. See the images in the space below:
The photos obviously give nothing away story-wise, as they merely show Holland and Wahlberg in suits shooting a street scene with a car in the background. It is however notable to see the camera operator in the images wearing a mask, a sign that COVID-related safety measures are definitely in place as the movie continues filming. For his part, Holland seems to be very high on the Uncharted filming experience so far, saying in a recent interview that the movie is “everything I dreamed it would be” as someone who is a fan of the original games.
It’s an open question whether Uncharted fans take any solace in Holland’s words about the film, as indeed there are a lot of worries that a young Nathan Drake story is the wrong way to go in translating the action of the games to the big screen. Of course, fans of video game series being disappointed with the eventual movie adaptations is nothing new, as most such movies fail miserably in capturing the spirit of the original works. That being said, it’s a good idea to keep an open mind about Uncharted and Holland’s interpretation of the Nathan Drake character. Holland may not be the right age to play Drake as depicted in the games, but there’s no doubt he has a lot of charisma, and has demonstrated his ability to carry a movie with his performances in the Spider-Man films. It will be fascinating to see just how Holland expands his range as an actor by portraying an intrepid, Indiana Jones-like adventurer in Uncharted.
