Avengers: Infinity War - How Thor Got His Eye Back | Screen Rant

After losing an eye in his previous adventure, here's how Thor got a new one in Avengers: Infinity War. While the original Thor made Chris Hemsworth a star back in 2011, Thor: Ragnarok would act as something of a reinvention for how he played the title character. In prior entries, Thor was somewhat more self-serious and while he had the occasional wisecrack, he was often overshadowed by the likes of Loki or Tony Stark. Ragnarok director Taika Waititi let Hemsworth embrace the humor of the role, resulting in a more entertaining take on the God Of Thunder.

This more humorous version of Thor carried over into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame - despite the character suffering quite a lot of emotional trauma in both entries. This lighter approach to Thor also reenergized the franchise, and Hemsworth will once again reprise the part for the upcoming sequel Thor: Love And Thunder in 2022, which features the return of Natalie Portman's Jane Foster; Taika Waititi also returns to the director's chair.

Thor: Ragnarok featured the title hero losing an eye during a battle with Cate Blanchett's villain Hela. Thor ended the movie rocking a cool eyepatch, which he was still wearing when he ran into the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War. While the eyepatch look was a good one, Thor eventually finds a replacement for his lost orb thanks to Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).

Around the midway point of Avengers: Infinity War, Thor, Rocket and Groot travel to Nidavellir, where Thor meets Peter Dinklage's Eitri, who makes him a new weapon in the form of Stormbreaker. During the trip, Rocket gives Thor a prosthetic eye, which he reveals was taken - not necessarily in a friendly way - from someone he met in a past bet. Thor thanks the "sweet rabbit" for the eye and pops it up, though Rocket reveals he probably should have washed it first, considering he had to smuggle it in a certain part of his body.

The eyepatch look mirrored that of his late father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) but while the option of not giving Thor back his eye was considered, Marvel ultimately went with the prosthetic eye. Considering the emotional hammering the character suffers in Avengers: Infinity War, opening with the death of his brother and closing with the deaths of literally half the universe - when Thor fails to kill Thanos - a brand new eye is really the least the filmmakers could give the character.
