Former Egyptian international jokes that Mourinho promised him a trial at Spurs
Former Egyptian international, Abdel Sattar Sabry, who played under Jose Mourinho at Benfica in his younger days, has admitted that he spoke to the Tottenham boss about having a trial in North London.
Sabry was at Benfica when Mourinho took over as manager of the Portuguese giants in 2000, in what was his first time in a top job after leaving Louis van Gaal’s coaching staff at Barcelona.
The talented attacking midfielder did not go on to hit the expected heights at Benfica and seemingly fell out of favour with Mourinho, with the Tottenham head coach admitting in 2019 that Sabry lacked the discipline and professionalism that he demanded.
The Egyptian has now admitted that, contrary to the reports in the press, he shares a very good relationship with Mourinho.
The 46-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2010, admitted that he is still in contact with the special one.
Speaking to ON Time Sports TV channel (as relayed by King Fut), Sabry said: “He remembered me [when I met him] and we hugged each other.
“He also took a photo with me on his phone and told me that he would send it to the Portuguese newspaper, A Bola, and tell them that he had dinner with me.
“The last time I spoke with him was during Tottenham’s pre-season, and I told him that I wanted to have a trial with his coaching staff and he said he’ll be waiting for me.
“I’m still in contact with him until now.”
