CD Projekt Red has revealed when fans can expect Cyberpunk 2077 DLC details to be announced, and it sounds as if more information is coming very soon based on statements made during the company's most recent earnings talk (and the Q&A session that followed). Cyberpunk 2077 releases on November 19, 2020, and will be one of the last major video games of the current console generation - although it will also make an appearance on Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles, too.
So far, response to Cyberpunk 2077 has been decidedly mixed. Some of the game's earlier controversies have been addressed by CD Projekt Red, and while that has certainly earned the developer a bit more leeway with skeptical fans, there have also been concerns over Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay after some early previews. With that said, what's been shown so far in marketing has all the makings of a major holiday hit, so it will be interesting to see just how much of what's been shown comprises the full experience. Cyberpunk 2077 has some big shoes to fill after constant comparisons to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which, while setting the bar high, also speaks volumes about developer CD Projekt Red's pedigree when it comes to open-world RPG experiences.
One element of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's dizzying success was its constant influx of new content, whether it be from free updates that added meaningful play or full-on paid DLC expansions that were the length of many full RPGs themselves. According to CD Projekt Red president Adam Kicinski in a Q&A session following the developer's most recent earnings call, fans will know much more about Cyberpunk 2077 DLC plans in the near future, as he expects post-release plans to be "revealed fairly soon; a series of free DLCs and expansions will be described."
Another interesting takeaway from the news is that Cyberpunk 2077 will have more add-ons than The Witcher 3, which already featured quite a few. Of course, there weren't details on what the makeup of those add-ons would be in terms of the balance between paid and free content, but it's a sizable undertaking either way, and one that speaks to CD Projekt Red's previous indication that it considers itself a two IP studio for the foreseeable future.
While fans were initially supposed to have Cyberpunk 2077 in April - and, before its second delay, this month - the game has undergone some serious overhauls and tweaks in the added time to its development. If that's what it takes to create the next RPG experience as all-encompassing and choice-laden as The Witcher 3, however, there will be few RPG fans who take umbrage with the extended development time - especially if Cyberpunk 2077 DLC can live up to the quality that was delivered in The Witcher 3's post-launch content, too.
Cyberpunk 2077 releases on November 19, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It will release for Google Stadia before the end of 2020, and will release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
