The Battle Royal genre has successfully taken over the video game industry. Thankfully, the Free-to-Play stipulation seems to be sticking among them. Spellbreak is the latest incarnation of Battle Royal, and has certainly taken a unique approach to the genre.
Spellbreak begins all players with 6 core classes which can be leveled up to unlock different cosmetic items. Each class comes with 4 Skill levels that are unlocked as each match progresses. Making to the end game will see a player's character harnessing all 4 of their class skills. This guide will focus primarily on the Pyromancer Class, and how to best pair one’s Fire Bending with the other elements in the game.
Spellbreak is about elemental pairing. Some time in the practice field will allow players to mix and match different gauntlets to see what works and what doesn’t. The players starting class will determine what they’re character wears on they’re right arm. In this case, Pyromancers will obviously start with the Fire Gauntlet. Players will also be able to choose from an assortment of talents that can be allocated to their class. Players have 6 skill points to allocate and can either choose 2 expensive talents or 3 cheaper talents. More on talents to follow.
As mentioned, elemental pairing is the key to success in Spellbreak. Let’s go over which elements pair with the fire gauntlet and how to best use them.
As far as Ice and Lightening are concerned, players can use the Ice Gauntlet to freeze their target in place and pelt them with Fireballs. Lightening also works for dealing consistent damage with its primary spell attack. Unfortunately, neither gauntlets pair for unique attacks like the ones mentioned above. Although Lightening and Fire make for a decent combo in general so players can have fun harnessing their inner Azula.
As mentioned, there are multiple Talents in Spellbreak that can be attuned to the player’s class. These talents are tailored to general gameplay and don’t really have much effect on the class chosen. Players should be focused on finding scrolls in the early game to quickly level up their talents. Some key talents Pyromancers should be using are:
Tracking (Mind) - On Spell hit: Outlines target for you and your squad (3s). It can be difficult keeping track of players as they fly through the air and spam spells. Anything that effectively ‘pings’ a target is going to be useful.
Dexterity (Body) - Jump Heigh: +25%, Levitation Mana Cost: -15% - Players will be jumping and they’ll be jumping a LOT. The reduction to levitation mana cost will allow them to cast more spells from mid-air.
Vital Stone (Spirit) - On Disruption (death) Resurrect with 10 Health. Immune for 4 seconds after resurrection. - Players should always opt for a second chance as it’s easy to lose track of a kill once the final few circles become engulfed in chaos. This talent is especially useful if players have a flight or teleportation charm equipped. They’ll be able to make a quick escape to heal and re-armor.
Still in its infancy, Spellbreak will presumably see some updates and changes as time goes on. At the time of this article, Solo and Duos options are inaccessible. Players can only drop in as teams of three on their quest to become the ultimate battle mage.
Spellbreak is available on PlayStation, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch & PC
