T-Mobile introduces its exclusive version of the LG Velvet with a creative parody ad, though the carrier's iteration has a different processor.
It's officially T-Mobile's turn to launch the 5G LG Velvet smartphone, as the carrier announced by way of a particularly inventive hype video. The ad, which mimics an Indiana Jones-like adventure, offers a clever way to showcase the device and rope in potential new customers. Though the smartphone debuted via AT&T and Verizon earlier in 2020, it's time for T-Mobile's turn in the spotlight. Touted as an "exclusive" for the service provider, the phone is set to launch in stores on September 10 with an intriguing tweak to its setup in comparison to the other two models on the market.
Previously, the LG Velvet arrived for AT&T customers in July and Verizon's in August. The 5G device was available in an exclusive Aurora Red finish for its Verizon debut and Aurora Gray and Aurora Silver for AT&T. The phone features a 6.8-inch OLED Full HD+ display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a powerful Snapdragon 765G processor to power it all. It also includes rear 48MP wide, 8MP ultra-wide, and 5MP depth cameras. T-Mobile is the final carrier to add the phone to its collection, and, as such, it went all out with a tongue-in-cheek parody commercial.
The cinematic new T-Mobile ad follows the company's Director of Creative Content, Desmond Smith, as he goes on an expedition in a dangerous temple. He finds the LG Velvet along with its accessories there and proceeds to unbox it. While doing so, he lines out all of its features. Curiously, the ad reveals the phone includes a "powerful octacore processor." However, instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon the AT&T and Verizon versions of the Velvet came with, the T-Mobile iteration features a MediaTek Dimensity processor. The reasoning behind the change is unclear at present. While the ad is well-done and has a fun, cinematic feel, it seems almost that T-Mobile was content to use it as smoke and mirrors to detract from the phone not including a Snapdragon chip.
T-Mobile appears to be deliberately vague regarding the MediaTek processor, especially within its Indiana Jones homage. The unboxing gives little information about the chip, but T-Mobile's official product page states the the 5G-enabled phone comes packing a Dimensity 1000C chip. While the Snapdragon and MediaTek processors are comparable in terms of specs, it's still strange the T-Mobile Velvet won't have the same processor as its predecessors at AT&T and Verizon.
At this time, there are still plenty of questions surrounding the upcoming T-Mobile version of the LG Velvet. With the phone officially hitting the carrier this week, there will be some time before those questions can officially be answered. For those uncertain whether this version is something they truly want to purchase, it may be a good idea to look at the AT&T or Verizon version instead, even if those launches didn't come with a cool ad.
