Drink driver claimed crash victim was faking injuries before she died at scene
An uninsured drink driver has been jailed after claiming a woman who died in a crash he caused was faking her injuries.
Godwin Ohue, 40, was more than four times over the legal drink-driving limit when he crashed into another car, killing Darcy Bruce-Lawrence, 20, in June last year.
Miss Bruce-Lawrence, who was a passenger in the other vehicle’s back seat, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering fatal injuries from the impact of the collision.
Ohue had to be pulled away from emergency responders trying to save his victim’s life after attempting to film the incident.
CCTV from the night of the crash shows a Vauxhall Meriva, driven by Miss Bruce-Lawrence’s mother, Donna Bruce, performing a three-point-turn in a quiet and well-lit street in Dartford, Kent around 11.40pm on June 28.
As the car moves, Ohue’s vehicle smashes into the side of it at speed, forcing the Vauxhall 14 metres down the road.
Forensic investigators concluded he was travelling between 48 and 51mph in a 30 zone.
When police and medics arrived on the scene, Ohue attempted to film them trying to save Darcy and repeatedly claimed she was faking her injuries.
Footage filmed later that evening shows the inebriated driver in the back of a police car giving a breath test reading of 150 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – more than four times over the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Ohue, of Greenhithe, Kent, was sentenced to nine years in prison after admitting causing death by careless driving whilst over the drink-drive limit and a separate count of causing death whilst uninsured on Thursday.
Investigating officer Police Constable Darren Chapman said: ‘Ohue’s selfish and exceptionally reckless decision to drive while drunk has needlessly robbed a young woman of her life – and her family of a future together.
‘His behaviour after the collision was beyond appalling and the decisions he made on that night have caused those who knew the victim endless amounts of grief and pain.
‘Although I am pleased that a custodial sentence has been imposed, I understand that for the family of Darcy they will live with the effects of that night for the rest of their lives.
‘I sincerely hope other people look at this case and think twice before they get behind the wheel after consuming any alcohol.’
