Children ‘barricaded inside’ Berlin school in armed police search
A major police operation is under way at a school in Berlin where children are reportedly barricaded inside.
Armed police are at the scene of the Max Taut Schule after an alarm was triggered just after 10am.
It is unclear if the children are in danger. Local reports say pupils have barricaded themselves in the rooms, talking is banned, ‘everyone is scared and some students are crying’.
Police say they have no information and that a search after an alarm is the normal process ‘even with the slightest suspicion’.
‘The police take such alarm signals very seriously and have therefore sent the forces to check the situation and search the school,’ a spokesperson told German media.
Under a tweet from the police, students who claim to be at the school say they don’t know what is going on.
‘We are at school and have barricaded ourselves, can anyone give more details about the situation outside?’ one said.
Another tweeted that he barricaded himself in the toilet.
Officers have reportedly asked people nearby not to leave their homes. Police can be seen on the roof and in front of the building, according to local reports.
A picture believed to be from the scene shows around 10 armed police leaving a van.
The fire brigade is also at the scene with 25 firefighters.
