Halloween 6: Why Danielle Harris Didn't Return as Jamie Lloyd
Danielle Harris began her horror career by playing Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4 and 5, but the role was recast for Halloween 6, to fans' chagrin. As an adult, Harris has become a full-fledged scream queen, seemingly content to ply her trade in the horror genre almost exclusively. It all started with Jamie Lloyd though, the daughter of Laurie Strode that was inserted into the role of Michael Myers' new target after Jamie Lee Curtis' iconic character was written out of the franchise.
In more recent years, Harris has played Annie Brackett in the two Halloween movies directed by Rob Zombie, and took over the lead role of Marybeth Dunston in the Hatchet sequels, in one of the rare cases where a recasting actually proved more popular with fans than the original. Harris is also a favorite on the fan convention scene, as one might expect. Outside of horror, Harris played Angel, a member of the Manson Family, in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
When Halloween 6 - officially titled Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers - came around in 1995, most franchise diehards hoped Harris would return to play Jamie after a six-year hiatus for the franchise. Instead, the role was recast with J.C. Brandy. Needless to say, fans weren't happy about the switch.
Both Danielle Harris and Halloween 6 producer Paul Freeman very much wanted her to play Jamie Lloyd in the film, as did writer Daniel Farrands. However, Harris was only 17 at the time, and was still limited by the amount of hours a minor can legally work a day. Naturally, those involved with The Curse of Michael Myers preferred not to have that limitation. Harris wanted the role so bad that she took steps to legally emancipate herself, which cost thousands of dollars out of her own pocket, and took lots of time and energy to accomplish.
Unfortunately, Dimension Films then hit Harris with a low-ball offer of $1000 to shoot her Halloween 6 role in a week, since Jamie Lloyd was set to be killed by Michael Myers around the end of the first act. It had cost Harris a good deal more than that to become emancipated, which she'd done at the suggestion of Freeman and Farrands. Dimension was unwilling to budge on the pay, and that, coupled with Harris being unsatisfied with how Jamie Lloyd's story ended - a feeling most Halloween fans share - led the actress to back out of the project. Interestingly enough, Harris later became friends with J.C. Brandy, who told her that she was treated poorly on set because the filmmakers wished Harris had played the role instead.
