Bring It On Sequels Will Borrow From The MCU | Screen Rant
Bring It On director Peyton Reed has hinted that the cult classic may spawn an MCU-style series of films. The 2000 film stars Kirsten Dunst as Torrance Shipman, the captain of the Rancho Carne Toros cheerleading team. As the Toros navigate a series of competitions, they have to contend with the fact their former captain had been stealing routines from the East Compton Clovers, a cheer team led by Isis (Gabrielle Union).
While Bring It On fits in easily with the teen comedies that were so popular in the late 90s and early 2000s, it's also a surprisingly insightful commentary on cultural appropriation. The Toros and the Clovers are presented as rivals, but Torrance genuinely wants to make up for the mistakes her team has made in the past. Isis is understandably suspicious of Torrance and her intentions; the film is about personal growth as much as it's about truly impressive cheer routines.
Speaking with Variety to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film, Reed and screenwriter Jessica Bendinger discussed the possibility of getting the Bring It On cast back together for a new movie. The film had four direct-to-video sequels, but none of the cast returned. Reed and Bendinger weren't involved in the sequels, either. However, they have been tossing ideas for other stories to explore in the Bring It On universe, adding that they are particularly interested in Sparky Polastri, the cheer consultant hired by the Toros to choreograph one of their routines. Reed said:
"Someone told me last year in the context of a Marvel conversation about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, someone said, 'You guys should really make a ‘Bring It On’ Cinematic Universe.' We started talking about it and were like, 'Wait a second,' and started devising certain things that got us really really excited."
Sparky is the closest thing the film has to a villain. He strides into the Rancho Carne gymnasium with an old-fashioned doctor's bag and a boombox, berates the Toros about their skills, teaches them a truly bizarre routine involving "spirit fingers," then absconds with their money and sells the same routine to several other schools, putting the Toros in jeopardy at their next competition. As far as side characters in Bring It On, Sparky is pretty ideal for an origin story. He's one of the most memorable characters in the film, yet we know next to nothing about him.
A Sparky solo film would probably look something like a bonkers crime film about a low-level con man set against a backdrop of competitive cheerleading, which honestly sounds pretty fun. And Reed knows a thing or two about MCU-style storytelling: he directed 2015's Ant-Man and 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp. If Bendinger and Reed are serious about a Bring It On universe, Reed is actually in a pretty good position to pull it off.
