Game Thread #22: A’s vs. Giants

Bay Bridge Series, sweep?

The Oakland A’s are looking for a sweep! They’ve already got two this year, and now they have another chance against the last-place San Francisco Giants.

The first two games of the first installment of the 2020 Bay Bridge Series ended in dramatic comeback wins for the A’s. On Friday it was a five-run 9th inning comeback against Giants closer Trevor Gott, highlighted by a walk-off grand slam from Stephen Piscotty. On Saturday, Oakland was down by three in the 9th but scored four off Gott, including a three-run dinger by Mark Canha.

In the finale, Mike Fiers will be on the hill for the green and gold, looking to avenge his previous outing against the Angels, in which he was pulled in the 4th after allowing five runs. The right-hander went six full frames in his two appearances before that.

The Giants will turn to Logan Webb, though the starters haven’t been their problem in this series — regardless of what the rotation has done, the bullpen has coughed up both late leads. Webb faced the A’s last year and was pulled in the 5th after allowing four runs, including a pair of homers by Canha, although San Francisco went on to win that game.

Ramon Laureano is still out for Oakland, serving the third of his four-game suspension. However, the other outfielders have stepped up in his absence, delivering the game-tying homer and game-winning sac fly on Friday, and the game-winning homer on Saturday, as well as another RBI triple and some nice defense.
