A new report from DFC Intelligence shows that over 3 billion people play video games. Video games have become an iconic medium over the last decades. Along with being integral forms of entertainment, video games can also apparently improve players real-life skills, according to a ESA survey.
Another recent ESA survey showed that over 214 million Americans are playing video games, with the survey going into the familial bonds that video games can help develop. It also goes into why people play video games and what benefits it provides for people. With all of the results in that ESA survey, it shows how much video games have an impact on people's lives.
This new survey from the DFC Intelligence goes into the playerbase of video games on a global scale. As of August 2020, over 3 billion people play video games, and over 8% of that group are console gamers with the highest user spending amount. Meanwhile, 48% of that group mainly play PC gaming. A pie chart with the amount of mobile users by region is also present, with the vast majority of mobile players in Asia at 53%, followed by Europe at 17%. The amount of mobile game players is the group that's increasing the fastest of all gamers.
Mobile games have always been immensely popular as entertainment as a business. The profits that mobile games can make off of microtransactions is staggering, which makes it unsurprising that many console games are taking the same route and raking in serious amounts of cash. A separate ESA survey also shows that 65% of American adults play video games in some form.
These figures give insight to what the video game consumer base looks like, as well as showing why companies are trying to make their games similar to the mobile market. The gacha genre is very prominent in Japan with games such as Fate/Grand Order. How and if these figures will change in the next 10 or 20 years is something to think about. Will mobile games be as popular then as they are now? Regardless, the amount of past surveys still emphasize the way that video games can bring people of all ages together. For how grimy the video game business can be, video games can and still do a lot of good for people. As the next gaming generation approaches with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, there's no doubt the number of people that play video games will increase even further, bringing even more joy for those that just love playing games.
