Hamilton’s The Reynolds Pamphlet Trends On Twitter For Hilarious Reason

The Hamilton song "The Reynolds Pamphlet" was trending on Twitter for a hilarious (if sobering) reason. Hamilton was a smash hit when it debuted on Broadway in 2015. Now, five years later, the Lin Manuel Miranda-created musical is experiencing a second life after it was released on Disney+, the House of Mouse's streaming service. The filmed version of the stage musical has allowed millions of people who were unable to make it to New York City the opportunity to view the show in its entirety.

Created, written, and starring MirandaHamilton tells the story of one of America's Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The show follows Hamilton's rise from his arrival in America to his eventual death at the hands of his sometimes-friend Aaron Burr. Late in the play's second act, Hamilton has an affair with a woman named Maria Reynolds. He's confronted over his transgression. Rather than hide the truth, Hamilton decides to write a detailed description of the sordid affair. It causes a political uproar, ruins his marriage, and destroys his chances to ever become the President of the U.S. It's a public relations nightmare for Hamilton and a disaster for his political career.

The official Hamilton Twitter account asked fans, "If 2020 was a Hamilton song, what would it be?" The responses varied, but the overwhelming winner was "The Reynolds Pamphlet" by a wide margin. That song was such a popular choice for the song of 2020 that it started trending on Twitter. Take a look at some of the reactions below:

Of course, not everyone agrees that "Reynolds Pamphlet" is the appropriate Hamilton song for the hellish 2020 year. Some suggested "Non-Stop" is a much better descriptor for a year that's included a pandemic, a major election, a massive fire, and continuous civil unrest. Meanwhile, others choose to break down the year by months, hilariously assigning "Helpless" to February (the month the coronavirus spread worldwide), "Take A Break" to July (a brief respite in the pandemic lockdown), and "Non-Stop" to August (as the coronavirus continues to ravage America).

While these are all excellent suggestions for the best Hamilton song to represent the year 2020, perhaps the most succinct representation of this relentless year is simply, "The World Turned Upside Down." Hopefully, with less than half a year left, we'll be able to "Stay Alive" just long enough to vote in one of the most critical Democratic elections America has had since 1797. History certainly seems to have its eyes on all of us as we wait to see "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story."
