A marketing campaign from Activision has essentially revealed that the upcoming Call of Duty 2020 game - almost assuredly titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - will be announced this Monday, August 10th, 2020 at 12pm EST/9am PST. The Call of Duty franchise has always been resilient even when multiplayer shooters waned in popularity over certain stretches of time, but the market for a quality title seems especially lucrative now that so many consumers are acquainted with battle royale-style games. That, coupled with Call of Duty's own take on the genre in the free-to-play Warzone, makes the upcoming Call of Duty 2020 a potentially major launch that could influence the end of current-gen gaming - as well as the beginning of next-gen, assuming that the next iteration will be coming there, too.
So far, fans are reasonably certain that the Call of Duty 2020 title will be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, based on a leak from Doritos packaging that advertised the usual Double XP promotion that has existed across multiple games and with different partners. While that's obviously not confirmed, developer Treyarch Studios has confirmed that the next Call of Duty is in development, with the team working with Raven Software to create it. The franchise has seen a rotation of different studios to keep churning out iterations of the series, and Treyarch in particular has a strong reputation among fans. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's confirmation should give consumers a better idea of whether it will resemble Black Ops 4 or not, too.
It doesn't appear that those waiting for Call of Duty 2020 will need to hold out much longer, as a recent marketing campaign from Activision has provided several influencers such as @charlieINTEL with crates that cannot be opened until Monday, August 10, at 12pm EST. That's likely the date and time Activision will finally provide more details on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - including if that's the name that will be attributed to the next game in the series - though it's unknown if it will be done via livestream or if those with crates will be the ones posting what they received to announce a release date.
It's also possible the announcement won't actually come with a Call of Duty 2020 release date, though that would be odd given how little of the calendar year is left. It won't be surprising to learn early on Monday that Activision is preparing a stream for 12pm ET on its official channels, either. Even if the idea of influencers all announcing a game simultaneously sounds interesting, it would be a missed opportunity for Activision's own social networks to not announce it themselves.
Regardless of how it's getting revealed, the Call of Duty 2020 announcement is pretty much a lock to happen in just a few days. The game's connection to Warzone and the broader design philosophies the series is now adopting in a world dominated by battle royales will be of particular interest to fans, and a release date in the near future could make it one of this holiday's most popular titles.
Call of Duty 2020 (rumored to be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War) has not been announced yet, but is currently in development.
