Tropical Storm Isaias Expected to Impact Maryland on Tuesday
Tropical Storm Isaias is expected to impact Maryland late Monday night and all day on Tuesday.
According to the latest advisory from the NWS National Hurricane Center, Isaias is situated 55 miles southeast of Fort Pierce, Florida, and is moving NW at 8 mph. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
The latest forecasts show a shift to the east, which should spare the Florida coast from the heaviest bands of rain. Isaias was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Models show the storm heading north and maintaining its tropical-storm-force winds.
Heavy rain and intense winds are expected in Ocean City on Tuesday. According to the latest forecasts, winds of up to 35 mph could be felt.
The rainfall outlook remains uncertain, however, a general amount of 2-4 + inches is expected.
The storm will likely clear out early Wednesday, but chances for rain will stick around for the remainder of the week.
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties until 10 p.m. Tuesday. No alert has been enacted for Worcester County, home to Ocean City.
In preparation for the storm, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MDMEMA) has activated the state pre-landfall planning team. In a press release on Friday, Russ Strickland, Executive Director of MEMA, said, “Now is the time to make sure you are ready for possible effects from Hurricane Isaias. The COVID-19 pandemic adds another layer of complexity during a tropical storm or hurricane, and that means there may be changes to normal evacuation and sheltering plans.”
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan warned residents and tourists to prepare for the storm before it arrives and to know their respective flooding and evacuation zones. For more information, click here.
